Taking Our ERA Petition to the Next Level

Inspired by the United State of Women Summit taking place at the White House in May, the goal of the recent event held by the Girls in Government, Leadership, and Service (GGLS), a before-school class at Julia Morgan School for Girls (JMSG), is to mobilize a national movement of teens 18 years and younger to finally pass the Equal Rights Amendment.

Our Rally & Summit was honored to have Gail Sheehy, feminist, best-selling author, and journalist give the Keynote that morning. One of Ms. Sheehy's books, Passages, was named by the Library of Congress as one of the 100 most influential books of the 20th century. Our panel of guest speakers also included: Cynthia Foster from Equal Rights Advocates; Kadijah Means from Black Liberation Movement; Girl Leaders and Changemakers Danielle West, and Gaby Battle.

GGLS were recently included in Change.org’s 2016 "Celebrating Courageous Women on International Women's Day” video. Created in honor of International Women’s Day, the video celebrates women who are effecting change by sharing their stories with the world. Included amongst such extraordinary women as Malala Yousafzai, Julia Morgan students are shown advocating for the passing of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), which would guarantee equal rights for women, including equal pay in the workplace.

This is the second Change.org video the girls have been featured in this year. They also appeared in the organization’s 2015 Year in Change video, which was released in January.

GGLS is now taking their petition to the next level with a video project on why passing the ERA is important. If you would like to join us, sign the petition, and send us your video at info@juliamorganschool.org.
