Our Admission Process

Julia Morgan School for Girls offers applications to 5th & 6th grade students for 6th and 7th grades. We offer forty-four spaces for 6th grade students, and based on enrollment, we may have two to five spaces available for new 7th grade students.
We consider both the Program Showcase (Information Night) combined with the Program Experience (Parent Tour) essential to understand the full program that JMSG offers. We strongly recommend that you attend the Program Showcase evening event first, when possible, where we provide an overview of our philosophy, curriculum, culture, and student experience. Our Program Experience (daytime parent tour) required of all applicant families, showcases how we live our Mission. Please contact Director of Admission Marcia Bedford  if you have any questions regarding admission.

#1 Attend the Program Showcase (Information Night)

The Program Showcase evening event is designed to inform prospective parents about the JMSG culture, curriculum, and community. Parents will also have the opportunity to participate in demonstration classes and speak with students and JMSG parents.

We encourage you to bring your prospective applicant daughter (only). While parents participate in the Program Showcase, guest students will participate in activities that showcase "A Day in the Life of a JMSG student," and includes a question and answer session and a tour of the school.

We strongly recommend this option before scheduling your Program Experience (parent/guardian tour). Click button at right to register!

#2 Program Experience (Parent Tours)

The Program Experience is designed to deepen your understanding of how we live the philosophy and curriculum in our community on a daily basis. The Head of School and Assistant Head of School will respond to questions that may not have been deeply addressed or may have arisen since your attendance at the Program Showcase evening event.

The Program Experience (parent/guardian tour) for 5th or 6th grade applicants is required
The Program Experience or tour of the school while in session (early a.m.) is required of all parents/guardians who submit an application. You are welcome to tour the school before applying; if you do so, your tour will have fulfilled the requirement.

#3 Complete online Parent/Guardian Questionnaire

  • The Parent/Guardian Questionnaire is to be completed online. This is required before you schedule the Peek Week (classroom) visit and the assessment. Applications can be submitted as early as September. Early application deadline is December 1, 2017 and the final deadline is January 8, 2018.
  • A fee of $100.00 (credit card or check payable to Julia Morgan School for Girls) is due when the application is submitted. There is an early bird reduced fee of $80 if you apply by December 1, 2017. This fee is non-refundable and does not, in the case of acceptance, apply toward tuition.
  • A copy of the applicant's Birth Certificate is due when the application is submitted. You have the option to submit it online, mail, or hand deliver a copy to the school.

#4 Character Skills Snapshot

Character and personal growth are an integral part of a JMSG education. Grades and test scores just don't tell us the whole story of your child. The Character Skills Snapshot gives us richer holistic information and illuminates areas where Julia Morgan School can help your child grow and thrive.

There is a $25 fee for ISEE test takers. Fee waivers are available for those in need. Please contact Emi Jerome at ejerome@juliamorganschool.org if you require a fee waiver.

#5 Submit Student Questionnaire

Candidate Questionnaire is available for download in the "Downloads' box to the right. This should be handwritten and submitted via snail mail or emailed to Emi Jerome at ejerome@juliamorganschool.org.

#6 Send in one Teacher Recommendation Form

  • One academic teacher recommendation is required. Teachers completing the forms must be your child's current teacher or taught your child last year. Please provide a stamped envelope addressed to JMSG or emailed to Admission Assistant Emi Jerome at: ejerome@juliamorganschool.org. The teacher must return this form directly to JMSG. Deadline is January 9, 2018.
  • The Teacher Recommendation form is available for download in the 'Downloads' box to the right.
  • JMSG will also accept the common recommendation form used by East Bay Independent Schools Association (EBISA) member schools.
*Please note that recommendations should not be submitted until November 2017 to give current teachers time to get to know your daughter.

#7 Sign and Return the Transcript Release Form

  • Please sign the Transcript Release Form and deliver it to the school your child currently attends. This form authorizes your child's current school to release a complete transcript to Julia Morgan School for Girls. Please provide a stamped envelope addressed to JMSG. The school must return this form to JMSG with your child's current year first quarter/trimester report card and the previous end of year report card, reports and evaluations, including all standardized test scores.

#8 Register for the Independent School Entrance Examination (ISEE)

All applicants are required to take the Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE) LOWER LEVEL (for those entering grades 5 and 6) and MIDDLE LEVEL (for those applying to 7th grade). While we require a standardized test, we consider all aspects of the application in our admission decision. Early registration is suggested as test sites fill up quickly. JMSG applicants may take the ISEE at any site.

Due to a policy change with ISEE administration, students will be allowed to take the test two times during the JMSG admission process. Test scores should be received by January 20, 2018. To ensure JMSG receives test results, parents must request ISEE to submit scores to JMSG. Our school code is: 054288.

For more information on the test, including registration, dates, and locations, visit Educational Records Bureau (ERB) website or contact ERB at 1.800.446.0320.

#9 Schedule your daughter's required School Visits

  • Girls who have submitted an application should plan to visit on a morning during Peek Week: January 22-26, 2018. All candidates are also required to participate in a JMSG assessment day in January. The assessment will give your daughter the opportunity to interact with fellow applicants through group activities and, for our faculty, an opportunity to get to know her better.
  • You will be able to schedule both of these days online after submitting the parent/guardian and candidate questionnaire. Links to register can be found, at that time, on your JMSG online application profile.

#10 Schedule a Family Interview (Optional)

The Family Interview is an opportunity for the admission staff to get to know your daughter and for you and your daughter to ask questions and learn more about JMSG. Family interviews are held October 2017 through February 2018. All parents or guardians are encouraged to attend. We ask that each applicant bring something meaningful to share during the interview. Families who complete an application may schedule the interview anytime between October and mid-February.

For Sibling Families* only:

Julia Morgan School for Girls understands the benefits of having daughters in the same family attending the School. However, what is right for one child may not necessarily be the correct placement for her sister. A sibling applicant will be accepted based on the Admission Committee's determination that the student will be successful at JMSG. A sibling's admission to JMSG is not guaranteed.

Sibling applicants who desire an early admission decision must apply by the December 1, 2017 courtesy deadline date (recommendation, transcripts with test scores must be received by December 1), and take their Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE) no later than December 2, 2017. Sibling applicant must participate in the JMSG Assessment on Sunday, December 10. Early notification will be made by December 15. The family’s response to an offer of acceptance must be made by January 5, 2018 by 10:00 a.m.

If the sibling family declines to enroll by January 5, upon written request to the Assistant Head of School, the applicant can be reconsidered for admission with the full applicant pool and notified on March 16, 2018.

Flexible Tuition:
If the family applied for flexible tuition under early decision and the school is able to accommodate their request, the family will be awarded a “provisional” flexible tuition award at the time of acceptance.

If the sibling is accepted, and provided with a provisional flexible tuition award, but declines to enroll by January 5, the flexible tuition award will be rescinded. If the family decides to be reconsidered for notification in March there is no guarantee that the same flexible tuition funding will be available.

*We define “sibling” as a child in a family currently enrolled at JMSG or in a family that has had a daughter or daughters graduate from JMSG. This includes half-siblings, step-siblings, foster siblings, adopted siblings, other children living permanently at the same address. It does not include siblings of students who attended, but did not graduate from The School.
