Julia Morgan School for Girls Hosts Only All-Girls Math Competition in Bay Area | Print | E-mail

Girls read math problems at the Count on Girls math competitionSaturday, December 6th, 2008 – 100 girls from seven schools were represented at the Julia Morgan School for Girls’ Count On Girls Math Competition, the only all-girls math competition in the Bay Area. The fierce competition included Castilleja, Hamlin, Prospect Sierra, Bentley, Girls Middle School, Park Day, and of course the Julia Morgan School for Girls.  Twenty-three teams (each with four 6th, 7th, or 8th grade girls) arrived at JMSG for the two and a half hour session.  Teams competed for awards in achievement, teamwork, creative problem solving, and team spirit.

The JMSG Math Department, including teachers Jason Beaten (6th), Liz Gibbs Campbell (7th), and Jodi Jusiak (8th), created the math competition in 2004.  They decided that the school’s alumnae should stay involved in the excitement, and turned over all proctoring to graduates.

100 girls packed the house for the Count on Girls Math Competition    “It was great,” said 7th grade JMSG math teacher Liz Gibbs Campbell, “The building was filled with electric energy and the speed round was particularly fun.”

A ‘speed round’ gives individual girls a chance to compete head-to-head in front of an audience of teachers, parents, and students. In this elimination round, girls had 45 seconds to answer problems accurately. The intensity created an immediate buzz of vivacity.

The school’s goal in hosting this all-girls competition is to instill confidence, capability, and fun for girls in math.

The Julia Morgan School for Girls is located on the Mills College Campus in Oakland, CA.  For more information on JMSG, or our events, please visit our website: www.juliamorganschool.org, or contact Melody Ferris at (510) 632-6000 x130.  We would be happy to arrange school visits.
