Nature, science, imagination explored as 6th and 7th graders meet literary experts Tuesday, November 3, 2009 (OAKLAND, Calif.) – Julia Morgan School for Girls students host Mary Ann Hoberman, author of over 40 children’s books and the new National Children’s Poet Laureate, and Linda Winston, cultural anthropologist and teacher – co-editors of the new book, The Tree That Time Built: A Celebration of Nature, Science, and Imagination.
The vibrant clamor of Julia Morgan students quickly falls quiet as Hoberman and Winston begin to give a detailed account of how their collaboration and journey toward publication manifests over a span of seven years, and why their latest book is particularly significant for young readers today.

Multicultural Women’s Leadership Conference Opens a New Dialog Among All Women To Create Next Generation of Leaders April 26th, 2009 (Oakland, CA) – “The Four Legends of Feminism” Gloria Steinem, Dolores Huerta, Aileen Hernandez, and Yuri Kochiyama inspired hundreds of women, including students from the Julia Morgan School for Girls at the Engage Her, Inc. conference on April 25th and 26th. Julia Morgan School for Girls – the only all-girls middle school in the Easy Bay –volunteered as bloggers and technology support for the inaugural Multicultural Women’s Leadership Conference, held on the UC Berkeley campus. Mable F. Yee (Engage Her Founder and C.E.O.) reflected, “The conference was an amazing opportunity to connect women and young girls of all communities and cultures. The JMSG girls filled the hearts and imaginations of all attendees and inspired us all to create better communities for all of our future leaders.” |

A Place for Women in Technology: Julia Morgan Girls Meet Cisco and Google eMentors |

On Thursday, January 22nd, sixty-four 7th graders at the Julia Morgan School for Girls got a face-to-face tour with 15 Cisco and 16 Google eMentors, building upon the connections made in December, when JMSG hosted Cisco. The unique eMentor Program, which has been running for 8 years, allows 7th graders to send email correspondence with women in hi-tech fields for 5 weeks via safe, secure email accounts (through www.gaggle.net ), while being closely supported by the technology and science teachers. |

Julia Morgan School for Girls Hosts Only All-Girls Math Competition in Bay Area |

Saturday, December 6th, 2008 – 100 girls from seven schools were represented at the Julia Morgan School for Girls’ Count On Girls Math Competition, the only all-girls math competition in the Bay Area. The fierce competition included Castilleja, Hamlin, Prospect Sierra, Bentley, Girls Middle School, Park Day, and of course the Julia Morgan School for Girls. Twenty-three teams (each with four 6th, 7th, or 8th grade girls) arrived at JMSG for the two and a half hour session. Teams competed for awards in achievement, teamwork, creative problem solving, and team spirit. |

Julia Morgan School for Girls Chooses New Head to Lead it into its Second Decade |

The Julia Morgan School for Girls, the only all-girl middle school in the East Bay, has chosen its Academic Dean Sandra Luna to succeed founding head Ann Clarke on July 1, 2009. Ms. Luna – a longtime educator who was head of Children’s Day School in San Francisco before arriving at Julia Morgan in 2006 – will become JMSG’s second head, just as the school enters its second decade. Ms. Luna was chosen by the Julia Morgan board after an intensive nationwide search that drew candidates from as far away as New York. |
