6th grade artists did a modern interpretation of Egyptian deity fashion and powers by making paper dolls according to ancient rules of Egyptian figure drawing proportions and gestures.

The 7th grade science class is conducting an experiment in the garden by changing a variable as they plant chard, spinach, and mustard from seed.

8th graders with poster project

8th graders created metaphor posters after examining the pros and cons of the symbols of melting pot, salad bowl and cultural mosaic to describe collective identity. They wrote Spanish poems about identity based on the poem "Mestizo" by Francisco X. Alacrón, exploring different facets of cultural background and personality.

8th graders learned about calorimetry through experiments that determine the amount of energy (calories) in a walnut.

6th graders made models of rivers in Science this week and have been observing the way the water flows naturally and what happens when humans intervene with nature's course.

The ERA activity calculated that due to pay inequities, JMSG students will lose $255 million in earnings in their anticipated professions over the course of their lifetimes because they are women.  Students wore purple and took this photo to send to Maria Schriver.

The 6th graders recently visited the King Tut exhibit, and are finishing their study of Ancient Egypt, and were thrilled to receive their very own piece of papyrus, courtesy of a friend of the school.

Last Friday, 7th graders traveled to Cisco, Google, and Pixar...

...the girls have been corresponding with women at these companies through the eMentor program.  A highlight of the trip was the eMentor lunch, where the girls got to meet many of the eMentors in person and chat face-to-face.

8th grade science has been exploring Rube Goldberg machines, which are deliberately over-engineered machines that perform a very simple task in a very complex fashion, usually including a chain reaction of simple machines.7th graders have been taking turns bringing a special guest to science class. These guest visitors have ranged from dwarf rabbits to turtles!
JMSG hosted teachers from Bay Area schools for a visual art workshop led by by artist-educators Luz Marina Ruiz (JMSG alum parent) and Cathleen Micheaels. The workshop offered an integrated arts experience through written and visual imagery.

JMSG performed for the school AND were also featured at "Pergoleto", a recent SF Flamenco show.
A Mills graduate student lead an informal show featuring The Music Improvisation activity group's final pieces.
Before winter break, students were treated to a pajama spirit day and hot cocoa prepared by the student council.

6th graders visited the King Tut exhibit at the De Young Museum and afterwards did a meditative nature activity in Golden Gate Park.  Each girl went on a silent walk and composed an individual Andy Goldsworthy sculpture.
8th graders are finishing their architecture projects, from designing floor plans and elevations for a house to constructing a scale model for an amusement park.
The entire school enjoyed short performances from the chorus, band, string ensemble, flamenco activity, and percussion ensemble before our holiday break?

Eighth graders headed to NASA to compete in a Robotics Competition with the robots they've been building and programming since the beginning of the school year.  Girls had to present a research project involving a problem in transportation, describe their design, and perform a variety of robot missions. One of our three teams qualified to move on the regional competition on Sat. December 12!

The first Spirit Day of the year, organized by the student council, was Colors Day!  Students wore whatever color(s) are their favorite or best represent their personalities.  At lunch, the student council reps organized everyone into a big group rainbow photo.

Seventh graders are learning to replicate the sounds of an Aztec flute with recorders. 7th graders observed the bacteria in yogurt in science class.


In preparation for winter, 6th graders mulched the JMSG garden.

8th graders are busy working on robots which they will enter in the upcoming Robotics Competition next month.

7th Graders studied masking traditions of African cultures, then made their own masks, textured and painted with symbols that tell stories and add layers of meaning.

Eighth graders listened to the accents of different countries and regions in Spanish class using iPods, and then recorded themselves to practice pronunciation.

Students from all three grades ran in the cross country meet on Mills campus on Monday.

7th graders measured shadows and used proportions in order to solve the heights of tall objects such as the light post and goal post.

Students defeated the faculty in the annual student-faculty soccer match with the ending score 1-0.

7th graders have been learning some of the basics of HTML.  They will be using their knowledge of formatting and layouts to create their own pages on the JMSG Intranet.

Eighth graders are working on robots that will be entered into the Lego League competition.

The JMSG Student Council meets every week and is made up of five council members per grade level. In addition to arranging dances, planning spirit days, making announcements, and keeping the School informed, they will also review and adjust the Student Handbook for the next decade of Julia Morgan girls.

The 7th graders returned from their ropes course trip, where they did hiking, journaling, and numerous teambuilding exercises including high ropes elements like "the giant's ladder."
Forty-two 8th graders volunteered to help out 42 6th graders who signed up for math help or challenge. During their first Tuesday lunch meeting, 8th graders interviewed 6th graders to see what they wanted to learn and accomplish during their time in "Math Buddies."
Seventh graders are reviewing scales and chords as they begin to understand the building blocks of musical accompaniment.

The entire school celebrated Founding Head of School Ann Clarke's birthday with cake for all.

In Spanish, 8th grade girls designed and presented posters about ¿Qué tenemos en común? that included poems they wrote, memorized, and performed for the class.  The creatividad was flowing.
Sixth graders created Andy-Goldsworthy-inspired works of art around the school campus.

Seventh graders are using the application Scratch to learn about the parts of plant and animal cells in Science & Tech class.
Leading "Monday Morning Meeting" (all-school assembly) is just one of the many opportunities for girls to develop their leadership skills in the school community.
In Science, eighth graders measured the different properties of objects, from finding the mass of a paperclip in tons to the length of a pencil in miles.

Seventh graders learned how to use microscopes, and viewed everything from pond water to dollar bills.

The JMSG Garden is supplying students with a healthy snack of freshly harvested tomatoes.


The Her-i-canes had their first soccer match of the year and were victorious over Raskob 3-0!

A new dance PE elective and  weekly seventh grade dance classes give girls a chance to learn some new moves!
Eighth graders tie-dyed custom shirts in preparation for their rafting trip.  While away, they will be engaging in team-building challenges and studying river ecology in addition to a whole day of white-water rafting!

The garden was used as an outdoor classroom for sixth graders who spent time making scientific observations of the plant life.

Faculty stood in the oval and welcomed girls on the first day of school
The class of 2012 met each other for the first time, and got to know each other through a song and partner dance in the music room.
As is tradition, the entire school begins the year by singing "Fanga Alafia,"  a greeting song sung throughout parts of West Africa.  "Alafia" is a Hausa greeting and "Ashay" means something equivalent to "good health and peace be with you."  The girls' gestures symbolize that you greet people with your thoughts, with your words, with your heart, and that you come in peace.

8th Graders are busy working on their Invention Convention projects!

Dressed in saris and bindis, the Sixth Graders participated in a Rangoli celebration during Humanities as a treat for completing their study of Ancient China and India. 
Rangoli are traditional rice flour drawings done on front door steps in India, and instead, the 6th graders adorned the front courtyard here at school, while enjoying idlis and samba.
