Count on Girls Math Competition
 
JMSG hosted approximately 95 girls from 7 schools at its annual Count on Girls Math Competition. JMSG alumnae proctor and lead the event. Julia Morgan's 7th grade team received an award for best teamwork, and the Julia Morgan 6th grade team got 2nd place out of ten 6th grade teams for the most correct answers.
Students at Google for Robotics competition
 
Three teams of 8th graders competed at the robotics competition at Google this past Sunday. Team “Mean Green Climate Machine” scored 1st Place (out of 19 teams) in the Teamwork award.
Pacific Boychoir visits JMSG

Students on field trip to Rosicrucian Museum

The girls in the "Raging Rocketeers" constructed their rockets during activity period.
Sixth graders visited the Rosicrucian Museum in San Jose as part of their study of Ancient Civilizations.
To help with test-taking skills, the School created flags with messages like "Girls Rock Tests!" for pencils the girls will use during ERB Testing.

Girls in ready stance in self-defense class
7th graders have been learning about healthy food and eating from JMSG parent Peter Chastain, Chef/Owner of Prima Ristorante.Professional photographer Michael Angelo Truncale spent two days taking school photos of students which will be available to purchase online at a future date.


7th and 8th graders in the "Core Strength and Self-Defense" PE class practiced techniques for fighting back against attacks from the front or rear, with an emphasis on yelling "Stop!" and "NO!"

Organization of African Unity Meeting
Girls with robots
Students were victorious over the faculty at the annual soccer match. The end score was 1-0.
7th graders simulated an Organization of African Unity Meeting in Culture Class.  They presented the most pressing issues facing individual countries in Africa.


8th graders are busy working on their "bots" for the upcoming robotics competition hosted at Google.

The 8th graders are studying Newton's laws of motion in Physical Science class.
Head of School Ann Clarke began a wonderful tradition of celebrating 8th grade students, which continues to this day when a group of girls are taken to lunch at the cafe on Mills College campus. During lunch, each girl interviews a classmate, and at the following Monday Morning Meeting, each student presents her friend to the JMSG community.

6th graders have been studying volcanoes in science class. While they have been focusing on scientific facts and theories, they recently held class outside and took a creative perspective to explain the Earth Science concepts by reading a Native American myth about the creation of volcanoes.

doctors without borders refugee camp field trip
8 JMSG girls ran in the cross country meet on the Mills campus last Thursday.  Cross country is about pushing oneself to meet personal goals, and supporting one's teammates to keep every girl going strong on a long distance run.  Kudos to the fabulous runners, and thank you to all the parents, teachers, and students who cheered them on!In celebration of Halloween, 6th graders dress up as the goddesses from their own creation myths.  The goddesses have their debut in the courtyard of JMSG, where they are celebrated by the school community, and then visit offices on Mills College campus.

8th graders went on a special field trip last Friday to Doctors Without Borders' Refugee Camp in the Heart of the City. Volunteer doctors and nurses who have set up and worked in refugee camps gave tours, and the girls were able to imagine and experience what life is like for the 42 million refugees around the world who are currently escaping war or natural disasters.

Students demonstrated self-defense moves in all-school assembly, including physical and verbal techniques.  They even demonstrated their focus and power by breaking boards! 7th graders practiced recording their voices with GarageBand in tech class.  Inspired by election mania, they interviewed each other on the topics, "Why do you think it is important to be involved in politics?" and "Do you think the voting age should be lowered?" 
As 7th graders wrap up their study of Sub-Saharan Africa, they show the results of their creative mask-making.

Earth Layers
Dia de Los Muertos

Did you know that there are at least 63 different ways to model the layers inside Earth? The sixth graders completed an amazing variety of projects this week to show what makes up our planet. The science room is filled with everything from cakes to posters, knit hats to pumpkin models!

Carolina Juarez, a volunteer from the Oakland Museum, gave a cultural presentation for Día de los Muertos, and the 8th graders made papel picado that will be used to decorate a community celebration at the museum on October 25.

During the next three weeks:
-The 8th grade will define for the student community democrat and republican and explaining their positions on issues
-The 7th grade will talk to the student community about the history of voting in the US
-The 6th grade will explain to the student community what the electoral college is and how it works
-JMSG will hold a school-wide mock election

Students cheered on the Her-i-canes, who won their first soccer match 7-0.Parent and student volunteers sent out invites to this year's 6th Annual Silent Auction Party. Save the date for Saturday, November 8!A greenhouse is being erected for the new Edible Garden.
