Born in rural Hubei Provence in China in 1903, a conservative time, when girls were not expected to be educated. Yet with great fortitude and determination, Xiao Zhen finished high school and then convinced her father to allow her to attend college. She lived through the Sino-Asian part of WWI bearing six children, two of whom died from lack of medicine, while being forced to flee as a refugee family to Taiwan. In 1952, she founded a small elementary school that today has one thousand students. She was also a member of congress in Taiwan for 37 years. She was a woman of great courage and commitment to education for young people. (Tile dedicated by her son Larry Tan, and her granddaughter Irene Yen.)
