The three-year Spanish program at JMSG provides a foundation in communication, culture and language study. Through dialogues, poetry, group projects, games, selected readings, films, skits, interactive media and class presentations, students are challenged to develop their confidence and creativity with the Spanish language. Additionally, students gain exposure to the struggles and heritage of others and are encouraged to become more culturally compassionate. Whether a student enters Julia Morgan with prior exposure to Spanish or is completely new to learning a second language, she will join her classmates on a journey to develop her language capabilities in a multi-level classroom environment. Students are challenged to become more skilled at reading, writing, speaking and listening and we encourage each girl to take responsibility for her learning. The curriculum includes a range of topics designed to motivate girls to become engaged in learning about language and culture. Some concepts learned in 6th grade maybe revisited in 7th and/or 8th in order to solidify and deepen a student’s understanding. Teachers incorporate methodologies to reach learners at different stages in their language study. Placements for high school depend on the language department at the particular high school, as well as the proficiency and interests of the individual student. Although most students continue to study Spanish in high school, the Julia Morgan language program gives girls a basis to pursue any language.
