JMSG believes girls should graduate with a deep sense of social responsibility. Teachers infuse Service Learning into every subject area. All teachers create a project that extends learning beyond the walls of the classroom and into the community.
In the 8th grade students participate in a year long service learning program called Go Girl (Girls Out Getting Involved in Real Life). This curriculum allows girls to explore important social justice issues on a deep and meaningful level. They research a focus topic such as hunger and homelessness in the Bay Area, immigration, global warming, elderly care or slavery in the 21st century and then become activists out in the community. They have examined homeless shelters and interviewed street people, they have labored in the fields as migrant workers, and they have designed and promoted plans for saving energy. Through this program, girls learn that with their education comes the responsibility to make the world a better place.
