The physical education program of Julia Morgan School inspires and challenges girls of all physical talents to develop confidence, flexibility, strength, endurance, grace, and athletic skill. Our goal is that each girl leave the school: - feeling confident and comfortable in her body
- having participated in a wide variety of physical activities including games, dance, yoga, sports, movement, self-defense and martial arts
- with a life-long commitment to movement, exercise, and healthy nutrition
- with a recognition and respect for women and men who are positive role models of physical fitness and health
6th Grade PE The focus for 6th grade PE is participation, variety and fun! Units for 6th graders include soccer, basketball, volleyball, mile run, self-defense, team building, and a variety of field games. Additionally, students learn yoga and dance every week throughout the school year. Dance Flamenco is a dance style that provides girls with the opportunity to develop an awareness of how her own body moves, and to express it with authority and conviction. Flamenco involves coordination and movement, but it's as much about recognizing the inherent dignity in every individual's body and being. Because flamenco rhythms are often challenging, they give girls a fun and unique way to explore music and math connections. Flamenco is very interconnected with gypsy and Spanish history and culture, so the physical component inevitably leads us to interesting discussions about ethnicity, identity, cultural diversity and social justice. 7th & 8th Grade PE
The focus for 7th and 8th grade is to build on core concepts such as: Being a supportive member of a team, nutrition, personal fitness, goal setting, anatomy, balance, attitude, and leadership. Each girl will have the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of activities while developing these skills. Classes will include; Yoga, Dance, Hiking, Team Sports and Individual Fitness. 6th, 7th & 8th Grade Yoga
Yoga practice fosters mind/body connection. Through asanas (poses), girls gain strength, flexibility, balance and stamina. Focus is encouraged through breath awareness and guided meditations. Students learn anatomy and physiology, self-reflection and the experience of being in a relaxed state. Sanskrit names for the poses are taught and girls are encouraged to teach segments of class to hone their verbal skills.
