The math curriculum is based on the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Standards, which emphasize the importance of developing proficient skills while learning algebra, geometry, measurement, number theory, data analysis, and probability. The goal of our mathematics program is to enhance girls’ confidence and ability while allowing them to experience success and develop a genuine interest in the subject. To help students connect and apply math to everyday life, at times concepts are integrated with science, humanities, architecture, and technology. Topics are presented as units. Daily lessons, group work, independent practice, and hands-on investigations enhance the acquisition of skills. At every grade level, the girls practice note-taking skills, discuss math concepts, demonstrate the steps of a solution, complete problem sets, and develop strategies for taking tests. Homework, tests and projects are used to assess the understanding of concepts and skills. COUNT ON GIRLS MATH COMPETITION The annual "Count on Girls" math competition was created to encourage all girls to pursue and excel in mathematics. Local public and private schools in the San Francisco bay area are invited to bring a team of four girls to represent each grade sixth through eighth. The competition is made up of two components. Part one is a team test, with varying degrees of difficulty, comprised of algebra, patterns, logic, number sense, and basic geometry problems. Part two is an individual speed round for all grade levels. MATH BUDDIES Math Buddies is an opportunity for sixth and eighth graders to connect during lunch and work on “more math.” Eighth graders can assist sixth graders with current assignments, and pairs often use this time to review basic skills, complete challenge problems or play math games.
