Financial Literacy | Print | E-mail

The financial literacy program introduces students to real life business and personal finance concepts. Throughout their years at JMSG, students explore, learn, and apply the following financial skills and concepts: personal budgeting, paying taxes, supply and demand, creating a business, writing a business plan, and current events. In sixth grade, girls study personal finance. In seventh grade, they focus on starting a business. During the weekly activity period, girls have the opportunity to play The Stock Market Game online.

The curriculum helps students develop an awareness of economic concepts. Students gain confidence and skills in making educated decisions around money. Through the use of models, this program allows for risk-taking in a safe environment. Financial literacy is an additional opportunity to integrate math into other areas of the curriculum. For example, percent to decimal conversions are applied to paying bills and balancing a budget. All team and individual projects require problem solving, and students work collaboratively to start a business in order to achieve financial goals. All of these experiences provide students with an economic awareness that they can apply in everyday life.
