LANGUAGE ARTS

Seventh Grade language arts develops the students’ skills in communicating their ideas both on paper and orally. Before the writing process begins, the students use the novels they read and the information gathered from the integrated social studies and art history classes for discussions, role playing, and debates. These activities help generate ideas for writing. We focus on how to create a solid thesis statement and how to then present arguments for a strong essay. We continue to master different writing mechanics and complex sentences. The course also covers research skills, how to write a quality summary, and current events.

DRAMA

Teachers integrate drama into the 7th grade language arts and social studies curriculum using it as a tool to understand and explore cultures and time periods in more depth.

MATHEMATICS

The 7th grade mathematics class reviews operations with whole numbers, decimals, fractions, percents, and integers. Units covered include number theory, algebra, statistics, probability, geometry, and proportional relationships. In addition to mathematical concepts and computational skills, students practice different methods of problem solving. Group and individual projects include applying similar figures, comparing standards of living, and collecting and organizing data of the four cultures studied in 7th grade.

SCIENCE

In science, the girls are encouraged to explore and observe nature. Through experimentation, creative expression and the practice of the scientific method, the girls learn about the organisms and environment that surrounds them. The course concentrates on Classification and the Six Kingdom System of Living Organisms, Ecology, Cell Biology, and Genetics. It also touches upon Bioethics and Human Responsibility for animal rights and environmental preservation.

SOCIAL STUDIES/ART HISTORY

The social studies/art history curriculum explores the years 500 AD - 1600 AD around the world. We begin in Medieval and Renaissance Europe and continue to the Americas, Asia, and Africa. Group activities, experiential exercises, social studies skill builders, and individual research are all important aspects of the course. The goal of art history is to form connections between daily life of the time, history, and costume to the artwork created in each specific time and place. We view slides, compare and contrast art work, discuss vocabulary relating to techniques and styles, and study and execute traditional techniques of each time and culture.

TECHNOLOGY

The technology class introduces students to slideshows in Appleworks where they create their own visual aid to complement the research done in their biology class. Thereafter students learn the basics of programming through an application called Stagecast Creator. Students spend the last part of the year is spent fostering relationships with Ementors, a program that allows students to communicate with women in the field of technology via e-mail. Through this supervised program, students converse with women about their lives and careers, and create a visual that depicts their findings. It is a great learning opportunity!

DANCE

This class explores many dances from around the world. We always start with warming up the body, by stretching and isolating parts of the body to gain greater awareness of movement, flexibility and skill. Some of the dances we explore include Brazilian samba, Cuban salsa, Romanian dance, Egyptian belly dance, western Renaissance dances, body percussion and many folk dances.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

The physical education program of Julia Morgan School inspires and challenges girls of all physical talents to develop confidence, flexibility, strength, endurance, grace, and athletic skill. Our goal is that each girl leave the School:
  • feeling confident and comfortable in her body
  • having participated in a wide variety of physical activities including games, dance, yoga, sports, movement, self-defense, and martial arts
  • with a life-long commitment to movement, exercise, and healthy nutrition
  • with a recognition and respect for women and men who are positive role models of physical fitness and health
Physical Education course offerings have included:
