Tuition Assistance | Print | E-mail

Is there tuition assistance available to help with tuition?

Yes, tuition assistance is available for families that demonstrate need. Need is determined to be the difference between a family’s resources and the cost of a student’s educational expenses.

How many students at Julia Morgan School receive tuition assistance?

Julia Morgan School for Girls is committed to creating a school community that is socio-economically diverse. To ensure this goal, 30% of our students receive tuition assistance, with grants ranging from 5-95% of the total tuition.

How is eligibility for tuition assistance determined?

Julia Morgan School for Girls uses the online service of Financial Aid for School Tuition (FAST) to do a standardized calculation to determine need. Tuition grants are awarded based on the information you provide on the FAST application and a copy of your Federal tax returns (including all schedules and W2s). Throughout the process we make every effort to take into account each family’s particular circumstances. If you are interested in applying for tuition assistance, the deadline for submitting your Application for Tuition Assistance is January 10, 2011 (JMSG sibling families please call the Admission Office (x125) for additional information).

What if I don’t have my 2010 taxes ready in time for the tuition assistance deadline?

It is important that the Tuition Assistance Committee has as much information as possible on which to base its allocation decisions. Plan to make a tax appointment as early as possible so that you can submit a copy of your return by February 21, 2011. The FAST application ask for specific information from your 2009 & 2010 tax return as well as a close estimation of your 2011 financial information. If there are any significant discrepancies between your estimations and your actual taxes, the Committee will reconsider the amount of assistance offered.  Tuition assistance will not be awarded unless we have received all required paperwork and tax returns. Tuition assistance applications received after deadlines will be processed only after all other applications that were received on time. Funds may not be available for late tuition assistance applicants.

I am self-employed. Does this affect my tuition assistance application?

You will still be expected to turn in theFAST application and your 2009 & 2010 taxes. Along with your 2009 & 2010 taxes please submit all 1099s and any additional employment information that you can provide.

Will applying for tuition assistance affect my daughter’s chance of being accepted?

No, a family’s ability to pay does not affect a student’s acceptance by the School.

When will I find out if my daughter has been offered tuition assistance?

Admission acceptance letters are sent out on March 10, 2011 and will include notification of any tuition assistance JMSG is able to provide. (Please note that tuition assistance will not be awarded unless we have all required paperwork and tax returns.)

Are all students who are offered admission also offered tuition assistance if their parents qualify?

Unfortunately, no. The number of accepted students whose families qualify for tuition assistance usually exceeds the School’s budget. The School is not able to guarantee funding for all deserving students.

My spouse and I are separated. Do we both need to submit our financial information to apply for tuition assistance?

Yes! Both parents/guardians of each girl are expected to contribute to the payment of their daughter’s tuition regardless of legal agreements. JMSG considers the income and assets of all of a child’s parents and family units in evaluating ability to pay, and requires all parents, including non-custodial parents, to submit the FAST application and their 2009 & 2010 taxes by the deadline. All submitted information will be kept confidential. Such information is never shared with other family members.

If my daughter receives tuition assistance her first year at JMSG, is she guaranteed tuition assistance for the rest of her time at the School?

Families must reapply for tuition assistance each year. Provided family circumstances remain similar and the School’s resources can continue to support the family, the School intends to support each student for all three years at JMSG. Because of varying resources of the School and applicants, and the changing composition of our applicant pool, tuition assistance awards may vary from year to year.

If my daughter does not receive tuition assistance her first year at JMSG, can we apply for next year?

Yes, families have the opportunity to apply for tuition assistance each year, but priority is given to families who currently receive tuition assistance and to new sixth grade families.

Who can I speak with if I have more questions about tuition and/or tuition assistance?

Questions about tuition assistance should be addressed to Darlene Bell-Carson in the Admission Office at (510) 632-6000 x125, or This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .
