FAQs | Print | E-mail

This page covers FAQs about the admissions process, including student FAQs from applicants which are answered by JMSG 8th graders.

Does JMSG administer standardized testing?

JMSG does not require standardized test scores for admission to our school. We will accept and consider any test scores you choose to submit as a part of you application, but such scores are not required. Instead, your daughter will be required to participate in one of our Assessment Days. Rather than being a standardized test the Assessment Day includes a range of activities and is an opportunity to get to know your daughter in a classroom environment, and for her to get acquainted with our way of doing things at JMSG.  Back to Top

Does JMSG have a cafeteria?

No, we do not have a cafeteria. Girls are expected to come to school with their own prepared lunch and a snack every day. We do offer a hot lunch program. The Lunch Program is optional and is not included in the cost of tuition.  Back to Top

Does JMSG provide transportation to the school?

JMSG does not provide transportation to or from school. We encourage families to carpool with other families in their area. When transportation is required for school events like field trips, parent volunteers are recruited to provide transportation.  Back to Top

Does JMSG have an after school sports program?

Yes.  JMSG competes in the Middle School Sports League in Soccer, Basketball, and Volleyball depending on the season.  Any 7th or 8th grader can join the team regardless of experience.  For 6th graders, we have an intramural program for each seasonal sport once a week that focuses on skill development, knowledge of the game, and scrimmaging.   Back to Top

Where do JMSG graduates attend high school? College?

JMSG graduates go on to attend a variety of public and private high schools, and colleges and universities.  Back to Top

Does JMSG offer after school care?

STUDENT FAQ'S

The following FAQS were written for incoming students by JMSG 8th graders!

How often is PE? What should I wear? What if I’m not a hardcore “athlete?”

In 6th grade, you have three types of PE. One day a week, you’ll have regular PE, where you play games, such as flag football, basketball, or kickball, and run around outside. Another day of the week, you’ll have yoga. In yoga, you will learn poses that stretch your body (and mind!) and also get to relax and breathe. Another day of the week, you’ll have Flamenco dance class, where you warm-up, learn steps, and put them together in phrases which you’ll practice across the floor, as a class, or in groups. For all of these, you need to wear clothes you can move your body in and for PE, good shoes you can run in. We don’t have PE uniforms, so you can wear your PE clothes to school, or change before class. Don’t worry if you don’t consider yourself an athlete. Because the students are so varied, teachers make PE fun for everyone. And with three classes, there’s always something just for you.

In 7th and 8th grade, students will rotate through 3 classes: Individual Fitness and Goal Setting, Team Sports and Leadership, and Movement and Health.  Some of the activities you will participate in during the year include track and field, circuits training, badminton, ultimate frisbee, kickball, soccer, basketball, volleyball, field games, playground games, dance, and yoga.  Back to Top

What is “advisory?”

Advisory is a group of 12 or 13 girls from your grade who meet together with one teacher -- your “advisor” -- twice a week. You’re advising group and your advisor stays the same for a whole year, so you really bond closely. Every new school year, you have a new advisor and a new group of girls from your grade in your advisory. In advisory, it’s your chance to talk about anything. You can tell your advising group if you’re having a friend issue, a problem at home, or if you just had a great weekend!  Your advising group can support you and help you deal with problems you may have. You can also come to your advisor privately to talk with her/him. Also in advising, you follow a loose curriculum (not academic!) of things to discuss. One week, you may talk about friendship and what it means, for example. Advising is also where you learn about things like Sex Ed. You may also do fun activities with your advising group too!  Back to Top

How much homework will I have?

The homework load really depends on the class and how much you have. Typically you have 20 minutes per subject each night. But it varies if you have projects. If you manage your time well, you can get your homework done very fast!  Back to Top

How many people are in each class?

The classes are small. There are only about 20 girls in each class. It's really nice because you  get to know everyone really well. Back to Top

Do I bring my own lunch?

We don’t have a cafeteria at JMSG, so you will bring your own packed lunch every day and eat outside on picnic tables! If you want, you can sign up for an optional lunch program. The cost is not included in tuition.     Back to Top

What if I get lost the first day of school?

No problem! Just take a deep breath and ask the first person you see for help.  The first two days of school are "orientation" days for all new 6th and 7th grade students.  (The returning students come to school on the third day.)  There are lots of fun activities to help you get to know other students and make new friends, learn your way around the school and get to know the teachers.  During orientation you will also paint your chair.  So by the time your classes begin, you have several new friends, you know all your teachers' names and you know your way around the school!
