GUIDING PRINCIPLES

Julia Morgan School for Girls believes that girls grow into strong, capable women through a challenging, exciting, and thoughtful academic program, one that combines hard work with fun. Our interdisciplinary curriculum blends the best of traditional methods with innovative teaching based on the developmental needs of adolescent girls. We will prepare our students to become life-long, independent learners and to meet future challenges such as rigorous high school programs.
  • The educational program cultivates critical thinking; teachers foster academic achievement and intellectual investigation.
  • Teachers have proven experience, inspire individual talents, and are role models and mentors for our students.
  • Students have the opportunity to excel in subjects in which girls have too often been restricted, such as math, science, and technology.
  • A project-based curriculum integrates all subjects to help students understand how disciplines interconnect.
  • The curriculum provides time to delve deeply into subjects and incorporates cooperative learning techniques and hands-on experience.
  • JMSG challenges girls to excel academically without the anxiety and pressures often placed on students.
  • Academics combine with service learning to involve girls in projects beyond the classroom.
  • The accomplishments of women and girls of different ethnic and class backgrounds are an integral part of the curriculum.
  • A balanced program includes classical traditions of western civilization and a synthesis of world cultures and voices.
  • JMSG utilizes the resources of the Bay Area, including field trips, speakers, and contact with inspiring women from all walks of life.

DIVERSITY

JMSG is dedicated to building and maintaining a community of students, families and teachers that represents the full diversity of the East Bay. The School is a place where girls from various racial, ethnic, religious, socioeconomic backgrounds and family compositions, learn and grow through teamwork and respect for individual and cultural differences.

A significant financial aid program supports socio-economic diversity.  Major donors and foundations make possible a JMSG education to a broad range of girls.  One third of the students at JMSG receive some kind of financial help to attend the School.
