At Julia Morgan School for Girls, computer use is an integral part of all curriculum areas including Spanish, mathematics, science, art, language arts, and social studies. It is our objective that girls become adept in the use of new technologies. Girls learn a variety of computer applications, routinely use the Internet for research, and produce multimedia projects that enhance their creativity, communication, and academic productivity.
During their time at the school, girls engage in: - Online Research
- Interactive software and sites
- Visual authuring
- Computer programming
- Word Processing
THE NEED Women remain dramatically under-represented in computer-related professions such as programming and engineering, some of the fastest-growing and most important jobs of the 21st century. The predicament originates in elementary school with reduced participation by girls in computer classes and clubs and worsens in middle and high school, when computer use by girls plummets dramatically. The American Association of University Women reports that in high school only 17 percent of the students taking Advanced Placement tests in computer science are girls. By college, few girls have the skills, confidence or motivation to major in computer science or pursue technical careers.
For girls who will ultimately pursue a career in technology related fields, it is vital that they receive a strong foundation early in their education. And because technology will be an integral component of many professional fields including the arts and business, it is vital that young women become empowered in the use of technology. To that end, technology is an integrated component of the curriculum at Julia Morgan School. Students have the opportunity to gain technical skills and confidence as they move towards high school.
