The math curriculum is based on the standards provided by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. It stresses the understanding of mathematical concepts -- numbers, algebra, geometry, measurement, data analysis, and probability -- and the development of proficient computational skills. To help students appreciate the utility of math in everyday life, the program is integrated with the arts, science, humanities and technology curricula. Instructors use methods such as group activites, hands-on investigation, and individual instruction to teach about problem solving, reasoning, and proof.

It’s common for some girls to believe they can’t do math. The School’s goal is to enhance their confidence and ability -- allowing them to experience the joy that springs from success in math. COUNT ON GIRLS MATH COMPETITIONThe bi-annual "Count on Girls" math competition is open to local public and private schools in the San Francisco bay area and was conceived by the School to provide encouragement for girls to excel in mathematics. Each school is invited to bring one team made up of four girls to represent the sixth through eighth grade. JMSG provides competition materials comprised of three tests which include the topics of algebra, patterns, logic, number sense, and basic geometry with varying degrees of difficulty for each grade level.
